Okay, so the hardwood floors are wavy, but otherwise in good shape; the bad news is, as others have said, is that they have to go to fix the underlying problem that makes them wavy.

When you say update, what do you mean, do you mean installing an entirely different type of flooring or sticking to wood flooring? If you want wood flooring still, you don't necessarily have to install actual hardwood in order to enjoy the benefit of hardwood, as you can install hardwood-imitation tile or linoleum; having to install hardwood, as you may know, will require a lot of maintenance to avoid having it deteriorate, etc. Having said that, if you want the actual hardwood flooring, the imitation type, or an entirely different type of flooring product, like tiles or carpeting, your best action is the easiest thing you can do for yourself: Get estimates, and a lot of them, form local flooring contractors by calling them. The rule of thumb is to get at least three estimates for free.

For Your Convenience, here's a great handyman site that has a section devoted to flooring. There, scroll down a bit and you'll find a text-link kind of in the middle of the page that offers up to Four (4) Free Estimates from local floor contractors (who do wood floors and all sorts of other flooring types) in your area who would be in the position to provide you a free estimate of the cost involved in installing WHATEVER kind of wood floor or other flooring you would want, all without obligation to you (the link on the following page will say, ';Find Flooring Contractors. Get Up to 4 Quotes Now...Free...';):

Don't seek guesses on here. Get free, concrete estimates from local contractors, trust me, I know from experience. Good luck. How much does it cost to replace hard wood floors? We live in a house built in th 1920s.?
If the individual boards are warped or cupped you can do a lot of sanding. If it wavy from the house moving and the floor joists crowning on you then you might consider filling and resurfacing with new hardwood. It will be spendy and depends on how much you love hardwood and how much money you can afford to spend. It also depends on what materials you finally decide to use. Need more specific information.
Sounds like you need to do more than replace the hardwood floors. More like a problem with what's under them. You will probably not find as good hardwood again no matter how much you are willing to spend. It might be worth it to take up the boards and put in a sub floor to level things out, then replace the old ones; sanded and stained a different color if you like. Or maybe you could sell the old wood and help ofset the price of new wood of a different kind.

Oak was around $4/sq. foot, cherry- $5.50/sq. foot, hickory $5. Figure around 5/sq. foot plus installment costs for new wood. Call up home depot or lowes for quotes.
