We had our house built 5years ago and cannot get our back yard to grow.?

Our front yard was sodded and not our back. We have 2 dogs and 2 kids. I think I have tried almost everything from fertilizer to tilling up parts of it and seeding. Is there something else that will help?We had our house built 5years ago and cannot get our back yard to grow.?
Hey. You will never have grass with a dog in the yard. You could buy the Zoysia grass plugs and it might help but with a dog it is unlikely unless you put them in an outside kennel or run. Good Luck! Hope I helped :).We had our house built 5years ago and cannot get our back yard to grow.?
depends on lots of stuff. sun, shade, watering, time of year to plant. do the research.
Between the dogs and the kids, it will be very difficult for you to grow a yard. You may want to consider just giving up on the grass for a while, and instead installing a garden with fenced-off areas or even a play area for the kids and critters.

Good luck!
Kids and dogs are not the problem. You either have the wrong grass, too much shade or the soil needs work.

Grass really needs sun to do well. Even grasses like St Augustine that are suppose to be good for shade have a problem if there is too much shade.

Is there too much shade for grass to grow? You might want to consider cutting some of the limbs off your trees.
Roto till it up, mix with lots of manure and fertilizer. water it down or let it get rained on a few times. Loosen top layer of soil then put grass seed on it, tamp it down lightly with the flat side of a hoe or something similar then cover with hay and try to keep the birds away. They will eat the seed if they can. The seed should not be buried more that 1/8th inch deep. Make sure that you have a good mix of seed for the area that you want, like don't put a shade mix in full sun or vice versa. Good luck.
With 2 kids and 2 dogs you probably dont have alot of spare time to do heaps of testing and having trucks come round. I would simply consider using a roll of chicken wire and some star posts to temporaily fence of a section of the yard and work on it that way. You biggest problem now i would think is your soil is probably very hard and compacted. You need to losen up the top layer of soil and then throw down plenty of grass seed and keep it well watered till it is well establishd. If your top layer of soil is to hard you will have to get some nice top soil trucked in (its not as expensive as you think) as you seed will never germinate properly if at all, grass in the right soil will grow very easily.
First, you may want to take a soil sample and have an analysis done on the soil (check with state or county co-op or local university) This can be done cheap ($10-$20).

If you have thin or substandard topsoil, you may want to have a truck or 2 of topsoil delivered %26amp; spread uniformly in backyard.

Based on soil test results, you will probably need to add some amount of lime to ';sweeten'; the soil and possibly other types of soil nutrients found commonly in most fertilizers.

For any kind of renovation, its important to wait until soil conditions are somewhat damp %26amp; soil is warmer (mid to late spring) for best results.

After soil is ready, purchased seed--depending on where you live buy a mix best suited for your region on the country with a low % weed seed as possible. Spread seed with a spreader.

You may to cover with hay or landscaper's blanket to protect. This will give better conditions for seeds to germinate. You want to make sure you have some means to keep newly seeded area moist (but not too damp-standing water for more than 48 hours will destroy seed)

Seed will germinate in about 2-3 weeks depending on weather conditions.

KEEP PETS %26amp; KIDS OFF SEEDED AREA.

Best of luck.
i seen someone try this and it worked for him...but if i was trying it i would do it in a small section to see if it would work before i tried it all that way if it doesn't work then you haven't lost as much time or cost.....he sprayed the entire yard and killed everything including the little bit of grass he had he left it dead for a wk then he scrapped all the dead grass and weed down to the dirt raking the dirt lose as he went and then resowed it with bluegrass seeds right after it rained he said the seeds do better but not to do it when it is raining hard ...he has a beautiful full lawn now.
