I wonder why he put pressure on councils to build more homes in the south east when other areas are crying out for housing. Surely this had led councils to approve the use of land on what I'd call bog water sites rather than greenfield sites, thus amplifying the flooding risks? Is Prescott to blame for the house building fiasco, homes on/near water %26amp; flooding?
no it is our own stupid greed, ignorance and belief that we can control nature
we for centuries have narrowed rivers etc (centuries before prescott was born) yet the same amount of water still flows so of course banks are going to burst
River where surrounded by reeds at their banks for a reason
No one forces anyone to buy a house on the river, in fact these properties usually fetch a premium, sorry it is self inflicted
we are not water voles or otters and should not try to get rid of them so we can live in their habitat, which is exactly what has happened
nature bites back and we are not superior in any shape or form to nature and therefore cannot control it for our own asthetic whims and pleasuresIs Prescott to blame for the house building fiasco, homes on/near water %26amp; flooding?
Being honest here, how many people would even recognise that their nice new estate home had been built on a flood plain? These areas are generally located away from cities, round small villages - you know, the mushroom effect where land of this nature is cheap and the local farmer gets it seen through planning courtesy of the house builders cash. I've spoken to many people living in that situation and their reaction to flooding is - ';nobody told us it would flood';! They shake their heads like noddy dogs when you ask if they asked the developers. Just because the roads are in and there's a nice big fence hiding the river from the houses they think they're safe, actually i don't think they think at all! They're like the morons working for the environment agency who say that dredging the rivers of silt doesn't do anything to stop flooding! God love a duck! Haven't these people an ounce of common sense and what the hell did they learn at school about dissipation? As for Prescott, well that idiot is probably very worried about the amount of tapping his phone has had. By now the news of the screws will have realised he's just another great wind bag full of pomposity and p*ss!
It`s all to do with money. If buyers did a bit of research and did not buy if a flood plain, valley, below sea level, or any other flood situation was involved, then builders would catch a cold and not build in those situations.
It`s not rocket science. Builders dont care where they build if people are willing to buy.
Councils have not built any homes since the 1970s, all the new social housing has been built by housing associations since then. There is a political difference.
yes when labour came to power in the 90s wisdom was that we were getting less rain and needed more reservoirs, until all the great rains of the 21st century
That happened to me in 1968. That was a long time before Prescott. It is nothing new what you are on about. You would think by now they would have learnt something!
Why was it a bad idea to build on flood plains again - I forget ?
