I'm thinking about buying a house built in the 50s but am concerned about the upkeep costs for a house that age. What are some of the things I should be looking out for?
Thanks!Should I buy a house built in the 50s in Dallas TX?
Have a ANSI certified home inspector look at it. They cost a couple of hundred dollars but they're worth every penny. They can give you a heads up on what is about to wear out and what should be updated. Also if the community you are looking to buy into has a occupancy inspection have that done. They will require it to be brought up to code before you can move in.Should I buy a house built in the 50s in Dallas TX?
1) Does it have plaster walls or gypsum (drywall)?
b.- Is there insulation in the walls?Attic?
2) Does the house have Central Air? (Air conditioning).
3) How many amps is the Electrical Service? (should be at least 150).
1950 is not really considered old. By 1950, houses were built with electricity in mind, so the service should have enough amps to provide air-conditioning.
if it was built in the 50's maybe it was built with american labor...
Keep a few things in mind.
How much can you afford to spend on repairs.
Will the house be worth MORE than the repairs.
How much do you REALLY like the house.
I will never own a new house because they are all cookie cutter designs to me.
I like the personal touch that can be added and usually a mature landscape that comes along.
My current pad is a 70's design, 4 bedrooms with pool in Richardson and I only paid 103k for it in 2000.
Think with your wallet first, Big head second, and little head if it will help you get laid in you cool love nest.
Now go drink two beers and relax.
