ICF Insulated concrete forms. What is the best house building material for protection from heat in the desert?
Papercrete or adobe. The papercrete is made from ground up paper nd portland cement dn poured into forms to make blocks. A 1 foot thick papercrete wall has an R value of about 30 and is practically fireproof.
Economical, 2 feet adobe

60'; underground cooler temp
Stone.
Make sure the ceiling and walls have plenty of insulation. If possible, go for high ceilings rather than low ones. The ceiling should also be high with ventilators to let hot air out. Two-story houses are always a lot hotter on the upper floor. Avoid plastics if they are exposed to the sun since most are formulated for low temperatures and low UV levels. Make sure the house has wide eaves which shade the walls. The eaves (or verandas) should also be insulated.

Don't have huge windows, specially not on the western side or south if you are in the north hemisphere, or north if you are in the southern. Lattice will shade the walls but let air circulate, plant trees on the appropriate side and use shower or bathtub water to irrigate them.

The ground floor level must be at least several inches above the ground level or dust will blow throught the bottom of the doors. Many tropical houses were built without basements and raised to

allow air to blow beneath.

The houses in the links below are not in the desert but you'll get an idea of some tropical houses new and old.
Are we talking interior or exterior?
