Would you prefer a house built in 1944 or a house built in 1981?

The house built in 1944 is 2000 square ft and has character, and the house built in 1981 is 1100 square ft and is more of a track home. Which would you prefer?Would you prefer a house built in 1944 or a house built in 1981?
Some of these people have no clue what they are talking about. Bored children I guess.

I live in a 40's house and buy them when ever I can.

Beyond character they are built to last forever. They are not track homes built as quickly as possible. Every aspect of the 40's home was built by people who took great pride in their work. My house is still PERFECTLY plume! Not a squeak in the floor, not a crack in a wall, nothing. My house will be lovely 100 years from now.

The odds are that your plumbing and electrical is not original, it has been upgraded, I would not worry about that.

You may have to replace the windows (only thing I do to them, other then sand those gorgeous floors).

Another great benefit of the 40's home is that it is build from plaster, none of that stupid sheetrock. The houses are quiet and stay cool in the summer. There is no way I would live in a modern home.Would you prefer a house built in 1944 or a house built in 1981?
The house built in 1944 will be more expensive, because the electrical, plumbing, roof, and foundation could be worn out. Replacing and modernizing those system will cost more than with newer house.

Having said all that, if you are willing to take on any problems, and budget to have systems modernized, I would take the 1944 house - just because it has more character.
Based on your descriptions, I'd personally go for the 1944 home.

Recognize that some of its systems may need upgrading, much more than the systems in the 1981 house. That especially applies to the electrical and heating/cooling. On the other hand, the 1944 home was probably much, much better built than the 1981 home.

Be sure to consider neighborhood as well.

Still, I'd go with the 1944 home.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION !!!!

I have always prefered the charm of an older home ... however you have to weigh in the cost of updating/upgrading ... WIRING, PLUMBING, ELECTRICAL.

never been a fan of the track home ... however if the location, and price is right ... it might be a little more ';turn key';

GOOD LUCK
I would pick the one with more character. Track home tend to be the same as everyone else's on the block. But since it was built in 1944 I would consider the risk of repair and money to invest if it would even be worth while as opposed to the 1981 home.
location location and location is the answer the upkeep on a older home is the same as a newer home (my opinion anyway) we live in a home constructed in 1880 have for 20+ years its not Original if the older house has had been maintained and updated Great!
1944 ANY DAY! Tract homes are too cookie cutter, with no character or anything that really distinguishes them from the neighbor.
I live in a home built in 1800. Character over any track house is the way to go. Better built and any remodeling will be done to your needs.
1944 for sure. I love the old school character of older homes.
