I hope that was the building you are talking about. What's the name of this historical house/building in San Francisco?
450 Sutter is downtown and a skyscraper, indeed.
I think you might mean Nob Hill with the Mark Hopkins (the tall, red one) and Fairmont Hotels. Check this picture and see if it's what you're remembering:

The trouble is, it's been sooooooo many years since I lived in SF that I can't remember any building between them. I do know they used to be ever so upscale.
I found this:
After viewing this historic building, reverse direction and head west 1陆 blocks up Sutter to the fanciful beaux-arts-style Hammersmith Building, on the southwest corner of Sutter Street and Grant Avenue. In the middle of the next block, at 450 Sutter, stands a glorious 1928 art-deco skyscraper, a masterpiece of terra-cotta and other detailing; handsome Maya-inspired designs adorn its exterior and interior surfaces. From here, backtrack a half block east to Stockton Street and take a right. In front of the Grand Hyatt hotel sits Ruth Asawa's Fantasy Fountain. Union Square is a half block south on Stockton.
