How do house-building plans work? Can you take any plan you find to any builder?

We're looking at floor plans from different builders along with plans we find in magazines and on the internet. What's fair game? How do house-building plans work? Can you take any plan you find to any builder?
Yes, almost. You can take any plan, or combination of several plans to a builder providing these plans meet or exceed local ordinances and building codes.

But, not really to any builder. Check around and get names of builders known in your area that do good work and have a fair reputation.

One other bit of advise, is you had better understand the details of any plans you are submitting for bid, and make sure you and the contractor are on the same page, as there are too many fly-by-night bums out there just waiting for a sucker. How do house-building plans work? Just watch out for copyright issues.

A particular builder may 'own' the rights to a particular set of plans...
